Ms Niamh Hynes is a Vascular & Endovascular Surgical Registrar at the Galway Clinic, Clinical Lecturer in Endovascular Surgery at the National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG), and co-founder of the Western Vascular Institute (WVI), a leading international vascular research foundation. In terms of clinical research she has over 45 international papers, book chapters, 250 abstracts, 150 international presentations, and 50 national presentations. Her research portfolio has been recognised by 15 international awards. The National Institute of Health in the USA cited her publication on cost-effectiveness of endovascular aortic repair as one of the most ground-breaking in this field in the last decade. She completed her MD higher degree, on microarray analysis of in-stent restenosis in Metabolic Syndrome, having established a dedicated and unique endovascular carotid stenting model in the Zucker rat.

As clinical lecturer in NUIG, she is involved with Medical and Bio-engineering Students. She also co-founded an international post-graduate endovascular fellowship in collaboration with NUIG, an innovative masters degree course to train our future specialists on the practical and academic aspects of endovascular surgery.  She co-founded the WVI in Galway with her colleague, Mr. Sherif Sultan. The WVI is a charitable research body committed to translational vascular research, technical innovation, professional and public education. Over the last few years the WVI has secured substantial research funding from government and industrial grants.

She runs the Annual International WVI Symposium in Galway, which brings together the world’s leading vascular surgeons, pre-eminent physicians, bio-engineers, researchers and industrial partners from a variety of cardiovascular disciplines, allowing dissemination of their ideas in an educational forum.  

Overall, she has dedicated her professional life to the speciality of Vascular Surgery and is an active member of several international vascular societies.
